Kolah Ghermezi (literally “Red Hat”) is Iran’s most beloved puppet character — the closest thing Iranian pop culture has to a national mascot. Created by Iraj Tahmasb and Hamid Jebelli, he first appeared on state television in the early 1990s and has been a fixture of Nowruz (Persian New Year) broadcasts ever since.
He’s a small, loud, red-hatted puppet with a squeaky voice and zero filter: hyperactive, endlessly curious, always talking back to the adult host who tries to keep him in line. Alongside his slow-witted cousin Pesar Khaleh, he turned simple studio conversations into sharp, funny commentary that kids watched for the jokes and adults watched for everything hiding underneath. Three generations of Iranians grew up quoting him.
