🐙 Interesting fact:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) — This poignant sequence features the tragic villain Davy Jones looking down at his music box, playing a melancholy melody that mirrors the deep heartbreak and betrayal he suffered at the hands of the sea goddess, Calypso.

To create Davy Jones’s iconic appearance, the visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) pushed the boundaries of performance capture. Actor Bill Nighy wore a specialized gray motion-capture suit and makeup markers on set, allowing the animators to translate his subtle, emotionally heavy facial expressions directly onto the character’s digital visage. His tentacled beard was meticulously animated with complex fluid-simulation software so that each tentacle moved independently, reacting seamlessly to Nighy’s jaw movements and the phantom underwater currents.

The character’s design and heartbreaking backstory turned him into one of the most memorable antagonists in cinema history, earning the franchise an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This exact visual of Davy Jones listening to his music box has become an enduring internet meme format, widely shared to capture a feeling of deep, dramatic sorrow, or to humorously represent someone listening to a devastatingly sad song.
