Joe Goldberg is one of the most complicated and disturbing characters in You. On the surface, Joe presents himself as a quiet, intelligent, romantic man who simply wants to find someone to love. But beneath that image is someone deeply obsessive, controlling, and willing to cross almost any line for the person he becomes attached to.
Joe’s relationships usually begin with fascination. He watches, researches, and learns everything about the woman he becomes interested in, convincing himself that knowing every detail about her means he truly understands her. What Joe calls love quickly turns into obsession, as he begins manipulating situations and people around her to create the relationship he believes they are meant to have.
His relationship with Beck becomes one of the clearest examples of this. Joe genuinely believes he loves her, but his obsession leads him to invade her privacy, manipulate her life, and eliminate anyone he sees as a threat. Even when Joe hurts the person he claims to love, he continues to convince himself that his actions were necessary because he was protecting their relationship.
With Love Quinn, Joe finally meets someone who appears to understand the darkness inside him. Their relationship becomes a twisted reflection of Joe himself. Love is capable of violence and obsession too, forcing Joe to confront the fact that the person he thought could accept him may actually be just as dangerous as he is.
