Operation Epic Fury began on February 28, 2026, with extensive U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. The United States targeted facilities including nuclear and missile sites, air-defense systems, IRGC command centers, and Iranian naval forces. The U.S. government stated that the objectives of the operation were to eliminate Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities and weaken the military infrastructure of the Islamic Republic.
The attacks took place after widespread anti-government protests in Iran had faced severe repression by security forces. Estimates of the number of people killed during the crackdown vary significantly among different sources, and no single definitive figure can be established. On the first day of the war, Ali Khamenei, the dictator ruling Iran, was killed in an airstrike. This was reported by news organizations including Reuters.
During the operation, Iran’s military capabilities suffered extremely heavy damage. According to an official U.S. report, more than 13,000 targets were struck, and a significant portion of Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, as well as its air-defense infrastructure, was destroyed. Washington also claimed that Iran’s air force had effectively lost its operational ability to conduct flights. However, claims such as the “complete destruction” of Iran’s entire naval or air forces should be treated with caution and presented as claims made by a party directly involved in the conflict.
