“Plyvyot Venochek” (The Wreath Floats) is a 2005 Russian folk-pop song by Nadezhda Kadysheva, one of Russia’s most celebrated folk vocalists and lead singer of the ensemble Zolotoe Koltso (Golden Ring). Written by her husband and longtime collaborator Alexander Kostyuk, the song is a melancholic reflection on fate, longing, and the passage of time, built around the ancient Slavic tradition of floating a flower wreath on a river to divine one’s romantic destiny.
For nearly two decades the song lived quietly in the repertoire of older Russian audiences — until the autumn of 2024, when its chorus was picked up in short videos across social media and went viral with millions of views. A new generation of Russian listeners who had never heard of Kadysheva suddenly found themselves obsessed with a folk song from 2005, turning a 65-year-old People’s Artist of Russia into an unexpected internet phenomenon and introducing traditional Russian folk music to an audience that had grown up entirely on pop and rap.
