Lions are not the tireless killers of myth. Most hunts fail. The grass hides as much as it reveals, and a zebra’s hearing is sharper than a lioness’s patience. So they wait. They read wind and shadow and the flick of an ear across the plain, and when they move, they move as one organism with many bodies, some driving, some ambushing, each role understood without a word passed between them.
There is something in this coordination that deep ecology asks us to sit with: the pride is not a collection of individuals competing for the same prize. It is a single intelligence, distributed across muscle and instinct and inherited knowing. We call it “the hunt,” but perhaps it is closer to a conversation the land has been having with itself for a very long time, one we are only ever privileged to witness the edge of.
